Blue Heron Bodywork LLC
Frequently Asked Questions
Q
Is prenatal massage safe?
Yes. As with any massage, there are rare situations (like high-risk conditions such as preeclampsia) where massage may be contraindicated. But for healthy pregnancies, massage is both safe and beneficial. And to be clear—massage does not and cannot cause miscarriage.
Q
Do you massage pregnant people in their first trimester?
Yes. While some establishments have policies against it, there is no scientific basis or contraindication for massage in the first trimester. Massage does not, and cannot, cause a miscarriage. In fact, it can help ease common symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and body discomfort.
That said, since miscarriages are more common in the first trimester, some clients choose to wait until their second trimester for peace of mind—and I fully support that choice. Ultimately, if you feel comfortable receiving massage, I feel comfortable providing it.
Q
Do you massage clients who aren't pregnant or postpartum?
Absolutely! While I specialize in perinatal massage, you do not need to be pregnant or postpartum to schedule with me.
Q
Do you only work with women?
I welcome new clients who identify as women, trans (male or female), or non-binary. For safety, cisgender men are accepted by referral only. If you are a cisgender man, please reach out before booking to let me know who referred you.

Q
What's the best way to schedule a massage?
The quickest and easiest way is online via the “Book Now” button. You can also text or email me, and I’ll be happy to assist.

Q
What's the best way to contact you?
Text or email is usually fastest. I do return calls, but since I’m often in session, it can turn into a game of phone tag. If you’d prefer a call, I’m happy to schedule one! I do my best to respond to all messages within one business day.
Q
What types of payment do you accept?
I accept cash, all major credit/debit cards, HSA and FSA cards, and Venmo.
Q
How early should I arrive?
New clients: please arrive 10 minutes early.
Returning clients: 5 minutes early is perfect.
The lobby will be locked if you arrive earlier.
Q
I'm sick. Should I keep my appointment?
Please don't. To protect myself, my colleagues, and other clients, I ask that you reschedule if you’re feeling ill.

Q
What should I wear to my massage?
Whatever makes you comfortable! Most clients undress completely or keep underwear on for skin-to-skin massage, but you are always draped for modesty and warmth. If you’d prefer to remain clothed, just wear soft, unrestrictive clothing.
Q
How do you position prenatal clients?
Once lying on the stomach becomes uncomfortable, I use a side-lying position with supportive pillows and bolsters to keep you aligned, safe, and relaxed. I do not use massage tables with belly holes, as they are not the safest option. Side-lying provides the best support for ligaments and minimizes issues like reflux, nausea, or pelvic misalignment.
When it’s time to roll onto your back, I use a “zero-gravity” pillow set-up that keeps your upper body elevated and your knees supported. This ensures comfort, proper alignment, and continued healthy blood flow to the placenta.
Q
Do your pregnancy massages include belly work?
Only if you want them to. Some clients love belly massage, others don’t—it’s always your choice. Abdominal work can be beneficial for relieving shortness of breath, pelvic pressure, round ligament pain, hip discomfort, or rib/diaphragm restriction.
In late pregnancy (after 38 weeks), gentle abdominal work can also help relax the muscles, potentially supporting optimal fetal positioning and preparing the body for labor.
Q
What kind of lotion or oil do you use?
I currently use jojoba oil and Soothing Touch Versa Crème. Both are available in unscented versions for sensitive clients.
Q
Do you do deep tissue?
“Deep tissue” is often a marketing term rather than a true modality. If you’re asking whether I can provide firm pressure—the answer is yes. However, if you’re looking for a “steamroller” style massage, I’ll be glad to refer you to another therapist who specializes in that.
Q
Should I talk during the massage?
That’s completely up to you. Some people like to chat, others prefer silence—I’ll follow your lead. Please do speak up if anything feels uncomfortable (pressure, temperature, bolsters, music, etc.). While I watch for nonverbal cues, I’m not a mind reader—your feedback helps me give you the best experience possible.
Q
I'm self-conscious about [insert insecurity here].
Take a deep breath—you’re safe here. I’ve seen it all, and your body is welcome exactly as it is.
Q
How much should I tip?
Nothing! My prices are all-inclusive. I pay myself a living wage and do not expect tips. If you still feel moved to give, 100% of tips are donated to a scholarship fund, which provides massage to clients who cannot otherwise afford it.

Q
Do you offer gift cards?
Not yet—but I’m working on it!
